What Blake terms the “Last Judgment” is when we cease judging reality: when the outer, literalising eye no longer inhibits or controls the imaginative or spiritual eye, the true source of seeing. Blake's image suggests the beautiful coldness and purity of the 'Angel of the Divine Presence', one of the most enigmatic and disturbing figures in Blake's work, and indeed in the Bible itself. As Damon notes, "The Angel of the Divine Presence is Satan. He may take the form of an angel of Light and is often mistaken for God." He is linked with Purity, as Lucifer is with Light. Purity was one of the things Blake hated most: "thou wast so pure and bright/That Heaven was impure in thy sight", he strikingly notes in 'The Everlasting Gospel'. Lucifer's sin was to think he was purer than God, which in many ways he was - as Blake repeatedly points out, God is not interested in purity. The obsession with purity is nothing to do with divinity, Blake suggests, but everything to do with self-righteousness and a sort of hyper-rationalising mindset (Urizen) that wants everything to be neat and tidy and clean and ordered, like machinery is - hence 'Pure Reason', 'Pure Logic' - and for whom the ultimate rational goal is a sort of mathematical purity. As Northrop Frye notes, "God is thus thought to be 'pure' goodness. Such a God could never have created Falstaff, to whom he would be vastly inferior." "In Hell all is Self Righteousness there is no such thing there as Forgiveness of Sin. The Fool shall not enter into heaven let him be ever so Holy. Holiness is not The Price of Entrance into Heaven. The Last Judgment [will be] when all those are Cast away who trouble Religion with Questions concerning Good & Evil or Eating of the Tree of those Knowledges or Reasonings which hinder the Vision of God turning all into a Consuming fire" (Blake, Vision of Last Judgment). What we see in this Image is the emergence of this process or program within the Human Brain - it is no coincidence that this Figure appears shortly after eating of the Tree of Good & Evil (ie of Self-Righteousness).
